Slings and Babywearing

Question: Will baby become "spoiled" if I carry her too much?

Answer: Sometimes, parents are cautioned by well-meaning family or friends that answering baby's every cry may produce a manipulative, difficult baby, a "spoiled" child. In fact, research shows the opposite. Responding to the needs of a baby or young child reassures the child in her formative years that she is loved and valued, that the world is a warm place where she can confidently express her needs and desires as she grows. "Attachment parenting" is the term most often used to describe a close, responsive relationship between parent and child. Babywearing is a natural part of most attachment parenting families. Parents wear babies because it meets the babies' needs and makes parenting easier. It enhances bonding and baby's development. Children grow confident and capable when their natural needs for closeness and dependency are accepted and met during their first few years. "Spoiling"? That's what happens to something that's neglected.

Question: How do I decide which sling is right for me?

Answer: You've decided to wear your baby in a sling. But which one? Both sling types are comfortable; the differences lie in the look and "feel" of the padded Over the Shoulder Baby Holder and unpadded Maya Wrap. The Over the Shoulder Baby Holder features an updated, contemporary look and a fabric selection of 12 solids and prints, including 100% organic cotton and hand-dyes like batiks and our rainbow tie-dye. Fabrics are all cotton or mostly-cotton/poly, and resemble those you'd find in a fine fabrics store. You may order a custom sling of this design using your own fabric. The Maya Wrap is a more traditional sling, unpadded and hand-loomed by Guatemalan women. The fabrics feature bold and vibrant colors woven in traditional patterns and one solid, our denim chambray. The fabric has a pleasant woven texture. The sling's top and bottom can be adjusted independently for a snug fit. Because this sling has no padding, it's compact enough to fit in your diaper bag, and can serve as a blanket, harness, or tether. The tail can be used for privacy while nursing

Question: How do I use a sling with twins?

Answer: Any strategies shared by other parents of twins are invaluable, and here they are! While babywearing is helpful for parents of singles, parents of twins rate it as essential for soothing siblings (who are quite used to close quarters!) and parents too. Customers with twins report the following sling strategies work well. Doubling Up One sling can hold both babies together until they're a few months old. Some parents choose the next larger sling size than they normally would to accommodate two babies inside. Parents suggest 2 doubling-up positions work especially well, which we call "Two Tummies to Yours" and "Footsies." Twins Position 1: "Two Tummies to Yours" Place one baby over each breast, facing the wearer, babies either in the fetal position or with legs hanging out below the bottom of sling, whichever the babies prefer. Tighten the tail until you're all quite snug. Twins Position 2: "Playing Footsies" Babies are reclining, completely curled up, legs and all, in the carrier at opposite ends of the hammock, facing each other. Start with one baby in the normal reclining position, head towards the rings. Then put in the second baby, facing the first baby. Again, tighten until snug. This position feels more secure with an arm around the hammock, which you'll probably do naturally. Using One Sling From the newborn days forward, or as the babies grow too large to share a sling, parents can use a sling for just one baby. Many parents write to tell us that they find using one sling very helpful to soothe the momentarily-needier baby, leaving hands free for the other baby, or for pushing a stroller. Nurturing one baby hands-free means the other can play blocks with Mommy, or one toddler rides so that Daddy directs only one child through the store on foot. Keep a sling in the car or basket of the stroller to help handle outings with two babies. Using Two Slings Having each parent wear a baby in a sling divides the load nicely, but is not always possible. Enjoy this teamwork when it's possible. In some cases, a parent may choose to criss-cross two slings - a sling on each shoulder, a baby in each sling. Twins Position 3: "Cross-Your-Heart Babies" Place one sling on your shoulder and across your body, and add baby. Place a second sling on the other shoulder and across your body, and add the second baby. Tighten as desired. Younger babies may lie down to sleep, while older babies may straddle the hip. This is physically demanding, but very convenient (and fun!) for short periods or in tight places where a double stroller is too awkward.
